The Myth Index

Myth: The body keeps the score.

The body doesn't keep a score of its own. It shows what your thinking and your behavior have fed it.

What's really going on

What people sayOld experiences get stored in your muscles and nerves, and the body replays them on its own.
What's realThe body shows what your thinking and behavior have fed it.

Heart rate is a good gauge of where your thoughts are. The more catastrophic the thinking, the higher it climbs. When the thinking settles, it comes back down.

Sleep, food, movement and the stories you rehearse all leave marks on the body. Those marks are real. They are downstream.

Treat the body as the record keeper and you go hunting for the past in your shoulders. Look upstream instead, at what you are telling yourself today.

Heart rate is an indicator of where your thoughts are. The more catastrophic our thoughts, the higher our heart rate.Dr. Heath's notes
