The Myth Index

Myth: Someone gaslit you.

Gaslighting is a label that claims one person can install doubt in another person's head. Nobody can. You weigh every thought you think.

What's really going on

What people sayThey twisted things until I didn't trust my own mind.
What's realNobody installs a thought in your head.

People lie, pressure and tell a different version of events. That part is real, and it can be named plainly: a lie, a threat, a disagreement.

What the label adds is the claim that their words did your thinking for you. They didn't. You decided what weight to give what you heard.

Two people often remember the same event differently, because recall is reconstruction. Calling the other person a gaslighter turns that ordinary difference into a diagnosis of them.

It's the name of a movie. It's the name of the light in my propane water heater. It's the name of the light on my dashboard fuel indicator. It's just a silly label for a silly belief.@therapy_bites, 2026
